Racemic lactide can be used to obtain racemic polylactic acid through homopolymerization, or it can be polymerize by ring-opening copolymerization with other cyclic monomers to produce random or block copolymers. In particular, the copolymerization of lactide with glycolide to form PLGA plays an important role in drug controlled release and surgical sutures.
